Albuquerque Police Shooting

38 year old homeless James Boyd was shot dead by police after drawing two two and a half inch knives on police. The shooting has been greatly debated ever since video footage of the incident was released. There is a lot of discussion on whether the shooting was warranted or not. I can personally see both sides of the argument but I really don’t know how I feel about this. On one hand I hate to see any loss of human life on the other I realize the police must protect themselves. Any way here are some points on each side.

Warranted: The man pulled a weapon and was only 8 feet away from an unarmed officer, the man was unresponsive to all attempts at conversation and submission, the man was mentally ill and therefore unpredictable, the man had previously threatened the officer’s life, and there was clearly no malice from the officers

Unwarranted: The man was mentally ill he really didn’t know what he was doing, the main seemed to be attempting to leave peacefully when police engaged with force, the man was clearly outnumbered and his weapons small, and lethal force should be a last resort only.

What do you think?

  1. That is a very tough call. I am glad that I was not put in that position as I would not know what to do. I think I am slightly leaning towards the Warranted side just because the man was mentally ill and you never know what he could be capable of.

  2. I don’t think it’s a tough call at all…the guy was clearly no threat to the heavily armed policemen when he was initially shot…they didn’t like the fact that he wouldn’t obey them…’Rambo’ American culture is why this guy is dead…in Canada those officers would be facing charges-in the US, probably not…
